Early Care and Education Program

The Child Development Center (CDC) was established to provide a training ground/lab school setting for Greenville Technical College Students enrolled in the Early Care and Education program, while providing quality child care for children six weeks through five years of age. It is accredited by National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) through August 2014. The center’s program revolves around the philosophy that each child has the right to be cared for in a nurturing environment, and that children learn through play and hands-on experiences.  Child care services at the center are available for Greenville Tech students, faculty and staff, and the community.

Hours
The Center operates five days a week, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. approximately 48 weeks of the year. The center normally closes two weeks in December, a week for Spring Break, a week in July and other holidays and staff development days as noted on the annual operational calendar. The Center is always open when GTC classes are in session.
The Center does not offer drop-in or part-time care - only full-time care is available. Parents may however, bring their children for all or part of the day.

Curriculum
The curriculum of the Child Development Center is the Project Approach, which allows the teachers to enrich the curriculum with some Reggio Emilia inspired practices.  The teachers listen to the children's interests to inspire the topics chosen for study.  Teachers encourage children to question and investigate solutions to solve problems they encounter.  Children in the center learn through play in the various centers in the classrooms.  Through play, children gain social skills, problem solving skills, and knowledge about their envoronment.  This allows the teachers to plan the curriculum around the children's interest.  Teachers also demonstrate negotiating skills to encourage children to use their words and express feelings and needs to their peers.  When a child is unable to share their words, the teacher is able to guide the child through the process or speak for the child.

Accreditation
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has standards that measure the quality of early childhood care programs.  As a NAEYC accredited program, the CDC meets a high quality standard by:

  1. Building positive relationships with teachers, families, and children to encourage friendships and partnerships.
  2. Providing a curriculum that promotes cognitive, emotional, language, physical, and social development.
  3. Teaching a way that fosters a positive learning environment, a caring community, proper supervision, and developmentally appropriate, meaningful experiences.
  4. Providing on-going assessment of each child's development.
  5. Providing a safe and healthy environment where the children are well supervised and provided with the proper nutrition for healthy development.
  6. Staffing the CDC with well trained Early Care and Education staff that are qualified and knowledgeable to promote age appropriate development of the children in our care.
  7. Maintaining open communication with all families in the program, as well as provide opportunities for parents to be actively involved in the education of their children.
  8. Building relationships with the surrounding community to enhance the program's goals.
  9. Providing the children with a safe and healthy physical environment.
  10. Implementing high quality care policies and procedures to ensure the quality of the program.
