The procedure for the Professional Development Policy should be incorporated in the annual performance review process.
- Development of Professional Development Plan (PDP)
- Prior to the annual planning conference with the supervisor, the employee will develop a proposed PDP based on careful consideration of:
- The college's mission and strategic imperatives
- Division and departmental requirements, strategies, and goals
- Proficiency and enhancement of current job-related skills
- Standards of Behavior
- Personal career goals
- Supervisor input
The proposed PDP will identify professional development activities, a timeline, estimated cost, and success criteria. The proposed PDP will also include both short- and long-term objectives and activities.
- In the planning conference, the employee and supervisor will review the proposed PDP. Updates or changes identified during the planning conference will be incorporated into the completed PDP.
- Once the plan is approved by the supervisor, the employee and supervisor will create an action plan for implementation.
- Assessment of Plan
- Employee will perform quarterly self-review of the PDP. Professional development can be documented and transcripts printed in PD4me.
- Biannually, the employee will report results of self-reviews of the PDP to supervisor.
- Employee and supervisor will meet to assess the completed progress of the PDP during the annual appraisal process and begin planning an updated PDP for the upcoming year.
- Requirements
- All full-time employees are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of professional development annually. For new full-time staff, completion of New Employee Orientation will satisfy 7.5 hours of professional development in their first year. New Employee Orientation consists of the onboarding process provided by Human Resources plus “Our College Culture” provided by the Center for Professional Excellence. Mandatory college-wide training directly related to job knowledge or duties may be included at the discretion of the employee’s supervisor.
- For requirements related to full-time faculty, refer to the Faculty and Academic Staff Manual and the FPMS form.
- Management Team members and employees who supervise others are required to complete an additional 15 hours of professional development related to the Managerial Characteristics and/or Performance Objectives for Management Team and Supervisors found in the EPMS in Cornerstone. Resources could include, but are not limited to:
- Completing PD4me courses or books on leaderships topics
- Completing continuing education offerings
- Completing college and university leadership programs
- Serving in leadership roles on internal college committees
- Teaching related workshops/classes outside of normal duties
- Holding office in a professional organization
- Serving on a professional board
- Up to five hours of surplus professional development from the current year may carryforward to the following year.
