Diesel Equipment Technology Program

Diesel technicians are in high demand and this is projected to continue through 2034. Students can choose from Commercial On-Highway Trucks, Heavy Equipment, Electric Power Generation, Marine and Locomotive industries.
Employment is very stable, with 86 percent of our graduates over the last 10 years remaining in the field.

Graduates will have the necessary education and technical skills to become a diesel technician in many industries.

Industry Partnerships are the driving force behind the success of our Diesel Program. We have partnered with over 65 employers setting up a pipeline for hiring students. Many of these industry partners serve on our Diesel Advisory Committee board.

National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence/National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (ASE/NATEF) certification ensures that training meets or exceeds industry standards.

Mission

The Diesel Technology certificate is designed to prepare graduates with the necessary technical skills to become a diesel technician. The student will receive a well-rounded education including basic knowledge and mechanical theories with significant hands-on experience. Graduates will have a solid foundation of knowledge to confidently execute the well-acclaimed ASE certifications.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

Students completing the diesel program should be proficient in the following areas:

1. Students will summarize engine theory and completely disassemble and reassemble an engine.
2. Students will summarize front and rear chassis operation theory, and identify and completely disassemble and reassemble a front suspension.
3. Students will summarize front and rear brake operation theory, as well as completely disassemble and reassemble a front and rear brake assembly.
4. Students will demonstrate the proper use of a digital volt ohm meter and all of its basic functions on series and parallel circuits along with demonstrating the use of fault code diagnostic readers to verify repairs.
5. Students will perform a preventive maintenance service inspection and pre-trip inspection. Students will create a repair order write up on all findings.
6. Students will summarize transmission and differential power divider operation theory and identify and completely disassemble and reassemble a transmission and differential power divider.
7. Students will explore air conditioning refrigerant state changes and identify components as well as completely disassemble and reassemble an air conditioning system.
8. Students will summarize vocational hydraulic system operation theory and identify components as well as completely disassemble and reassemble a wet line hydraulic system.
