EMT Paramedic FAQ

Can I further my education after I receive my associate degree?

Yes. The credits received are transferable to most other colleges and universities. Many students continue their education and complete bachelor degrees through 4-year institutions. 

Do I need any previous EMS experience or training to enter this program?

No experience is required to begin the EMT program but you do need to meet the placement requirements. To begin the Paramedic program, a national and state level EMT certification is required. Certain general education courses are also required prior to admission.

Do I need to have the Hepatitis B vaccine (HBV)?

Although not a requirement, it is highly recommended. It is required that you review information related to HBV. The cost of the HBV series is approximately $150. Please be advised that these are cost estimates and GTC has no control over the costs.

When do I need to have my physical & immunizations completed?

All health requirements, physicals, and immunizations (including the Tuberculosis screening) MUST be completed BY THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS!  There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this deadline.  Physicals and any needed immunizations can be administered through your primary care physician or at an urgent care/minute clinic.  Please be advised that GTC has no control over the costs associated with any health requirement.

What are the clinical requirements of the Paramedic program?

You will complete the Paramedic program with a minimum of 270 hours of clinical (hospital) experience and 360 hours of field internship (ambulance experience). All hours are performed under the supervision of an experienced paramedic and/or RN with emergency medical experience. These are minimal requirements; you will have the opportunity to put in more time should you choose to do so.

What certifications will I have when I finish the Paramedic program?

EMT and Paramedic certifications will be obtained as well as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Healthcare Provider, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).

When do you offer EMT courses?

EMT courses are offered Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.
