A gift from NUCOR Steel has helped the Truck Driver Training and Welding programs at Greenville Technical College. The company?s operation in Darlington, South Carolina donated steel to be used by welding students in their labs at the Brashier and Barton campuses at Greenville Tech. With Darlington about 200 miles away, the challenge became getting the steel to Greenville. That?s where the Truck Driver Training program assisted. Three students and their instructor took eight hours to drive the round trip and spent another hour at the NuCor site loading and securing the steel. The gift of steel weighing nearly 60 tons was valued at $46,000. Welding department head Kelvin Byrd said, ?This is a significant gift that will ensure the students at Greenville Tech have real world experience in their labs, and are best prepared for the world of work. There is great demand for skilled, well-trained welders.? Truck driver training department head, Brian Chambers, said, ?The travel, the work of getting the trucks in position to load the steel, and the loading and unloading of the steel are exactly what our program?s graduates will do when they go into the world of work. This was a tremendous opportunity to gain real world experience that will greatly assist the students.? NuCor Shipping Supervisor, Phillip Clarke, said, ?The students did a great job of moving the product onto their trucks. We are quite pleased to be able to assist the welding students at Greenville Tech. Many will have the opportunity to work with our products in the jobs they receive when they graduate.?
