Counseling is appropriate for anyone who is troubled by a specific problem or has a general concern. Most students will use their existing coping skills to resolve their concerns. If, after using these skills, a student is still struggling, then accessing professional services is recommended.
We are proud to say that counseling sessions are free of charge to enrolled students at GTC. For students presenting with concerns that may require long term therapy or that are beyond the scope of our practice will be provided with some resources to community agencies.
Counselors maintain confidentiality, which means they will not disclose any information that you share in session with anyone else (including instructors, family, friends, etc.), unless you sign a release authorizing them to do so. *Counseling records are separate from your academic records so will not go with you if you transfer.
There are some exceptions to confidentiality. Counselors are legally bound to disclose information if a student shares that they plan to harm themselves or another person, if there is suspected abuse or neglect of children or the elderly, or if records are subpoenaed in a court of law.
Any GTC student who is at least 18 years old and enrolled in classes may utilize counseling resources for free. Currently, we do not see dual enrollment students. We encourage you to speak with your guidance counselor for support or resources.
Walk-ins are welcome, however, you may be asked to wait until a counselor is available. We recommend making an appointment so that a counselor can be available to meet with you. You can email us at CounselingServices@gvltec.edu, call 864-250-8322, or click to Get Started.
Even though our physical location is on the Barton Campus, if schedules allow, we can plan to meet with you at another campus or schedule a virtual session. Just let us know when you reach out, what your preference is.
In group counseling there are often several other students who are working with the same counselor together on similar problems or goals. Being part of a group can help you realize you are not alone, provide new perspectives and skills, and offer you a chance to give and receive support. If you are interested in group counseling, please contact us for more information on topics and times as they vary by semester.
