Over 70% of medical decisions made by physicians are based on information obtained from lab tests. This information comes from the work of the medical laboratory technician. A vital part of the health care team, a MLT performs a full range of tests in hematology, chemistry, microbiology and blood banking, and helps to diagnose a variety of diseases and blood disorders.
The Medical Laboratory Technology program at Greenville Technical College will give you the skills you need to fill this important, behind-the-scenes role in medical care. Thanks to a combination of classroom and hands-on experiences, you’ll be well prepared to perform a full range of testing and confirm its accuracy.
If you're seeking a career in a high-demand field, we can help make your education even more affordable.
The Career Pathways Scholarship may cover the cost of tuition, fees and books if you're enrolled in a qualifying program at GTC.
Please note: Pre-Health Sciences and Pre-Nursing students who are currently enrolled as Associate of Science students are not eligible for the scholarship until they are accepted and enrolled into the Health Sciences/Nursing program they have selected.
Due to changes occurring in health care, there is a bright outlook for employment for the Greenville Technical College MLT graduate. Currently, there is a nationwide shortage of medical laboratory professionals, which is expected to increase salaries and other benefits including relocation bonuses and educational assistance. Opportunities are found in hospitals, physicians' offices, medical research facilities, industrial laboratories and government agencies.

Graduate Certification
Upon graduation from the MLT program, students are encouraged to take a national certification exam. Most clinical laboratories require new graduates to become certified within one year of graduation in order to maintain employment. Several agencies offer certification exams, but the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) offers the most widely-accepted exam. Successful completion of the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) exam indicates that an individual has demonstrated the crucial knowledge required by a medical laboratory technician to accurately perform his/her job duties.
In addition to national certification, some states require that MLTs obtain a state license to work in the profession. However, currently South Carolina is not one of these states.
Professional Licensure and Certification Requirements
Students who are considering an academic program that may allow them to pursue professional licensure in another state are strongly encouraged to check that state’s information and contact the appropriate licensing agency for additional information and guidance before beginning the program.
Greenville Technical College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate and baccalaureate degrees. Degree-granting institutions also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels.
