A Career Night showcasing opportunities in the Animal Studies field will held at Greenville Technical College?s Northwest Campus on April 8 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Three programs of study are offered. A Professional Grooming and Animal Care certificate prepares graduates for entry-level positions in a grooming business or to establish their own businesses. The Veterinary Assistant certificate trains students for entry-level positions in kennels, veterinary offices, shelters, and animal hospitals. Phase One of a Veterinary Technology associate degree is offered at Greenville Tech, with Phase II offered at Tri-County Tech. Licensed veterinary technicians serve as members of the veterinary care team, assisting with many aspects of patient care including anesthesia and surgical support, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory procedures. Veterinarians rely on the vet tech. ?A veterinarian is only as good as their veterinary technician,? says Dr. Michelle Mayers of Hillcrest Animal Hospital. ?We work together as a team. The veterinary technician plays such a vital role in an animal hospital.? According to Career Coach, 674 veterinary technologists and technicians are employed in the Upstate, and this number is expected to increase by 20.9% over the next four years. The median wage for this position is $14.16 locally.
