August 21 is not only the day for the total solar eclipse but also the start of Fall Semester 2017! Greenville is expected to be a center point for the eclipse, making Greenville Technical College campuses prime viewing spots. The eclipse process will begin at approximately 1:07 p.m. with a partial eclipse continuing through 2:38 p.m., when the total eclipse will cause 2 ½ minutes of total darkness.
A committee of employees has scheduled eclipse-related events between noon and 3 p.m.
No classes will be cancelled on August 21. Instead, the schedule will be modified so that faculty may use the eclipse as a learning and engagement opportunity with their students. Classes that normally run from 12:45 p.m. until 2:05 p.m. will end at 1:45 p.m. Classes that normally begin at 2:20 p.m. will start at 3 p.m.
Of prime concern for all participants is safety. In order to avoid the risk of eye injury, protective sunglasses will be available at designated viewing locations at all campuses for students and employees beginning at noon on August 21. More information about designated viewing areas will be available soon.
