In recognition of Constitution Day on Sunday, September 17, the English Department of Greenville Technical College will host the annual Constitution Day program to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution by offering citizens the opportunity to learn more about our founding document.
Ross Wagner, associate professor of English, will present “The Constitution and Freedom of Speech,” a lecture celebrating the Constitution and Citizenship day.
The public is invited to attend and encouraged to come prepared to participate in an interactive discussion about 1st Amendment free speech protections – from abstract considerations to specific situations. The event will be held Monday, September 18 in the Barton Campus Library’s Scholars’ Corner in the Technical Resource Center (building 102) from 1-2 p.m.
The presentation will examine the ideas and reasoning that support freedom of speech, what the constitutional language means, and how it applies. A detailed review of Texas v. Johnson (1989), which ruled that burning the American flag in protest is protected under the 1stAmendment, will be part of the lecture and discussion.
