More than 330 graduates participated in Commencement Exercises for Greenville Technical College, held on Friday, May 4 at the TD Convention Center.
Kaitlyn Coons received a President’s Award. A strong student who aspires to be even better, Kaitlyn is described as one of the most promising and high performing students Greenville Technical College has welcomed. Part of the college’s Honors Program, she plans to continue her education at a four-year college as she works to become a professional writer.
Hope M. Matherly also received a President’s Award. Hope has graduated with two associate degrees and the full Honors Program designation and distinction. A student leader, she cares not only about her own academic experience, but also leads others to excellence. Hope plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in forensic anthropology or a related field.
Mitchell Loftis received the Outstanding Alumnus Award. Loftis earned an associate degree in Computer Technology/Network Administration and a certificate in Cisco Routing/Network Configuration in 2010. He currently serves as an application deployment systems administrator for Greenville Health System. Though busy with his career, Loftis is also an active volunteer in the community and beyond, assisting churches with computer and media needs.
Melvin and Dollie Younts received the Honorary Alumnus Award. Since their marriage in 1951, they have supported the Upstate with their time, talent, and treasure. Their generosity has made a deep impact on the area in which they live, with beneficiaries including Greenville Technical College’s Center for Manufacturing Innovation.
April Dove was recognized as Faculty of the Year. Dove is director of Greenville Technical College’s Honors Program, the oldest, largest, and most fully developed Honors Program among the 16 technical colleges in South Carolina. A faculty member since 2009, Dove teaches sociology in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and enjoys helping students understand the world in which they live.
Laurie Berry-Dorroh was honored as Adjunct Faculty of the Year. She has taught English as a Second Language at GTC since 2006, working with the ESL program director to develop an academic, content-based curriculum to ensure ESL students at the college are prepared for real-life reading and writing tasks in their major courses.
