Dr. Jermaine Whirl, vice president for learning and workforce development at Greenville Technical College (GTC), has been selected to the 40 Under 40 Class of 2018 by Georgia Southern University’s Alumni Association.
This honor recognizes alumni of Georgia Southern University or its Armstrong Campus (formerly Armstrong State University) under the age of 40 who are leading the way in business, leadership, community, educational and/or philanthropic endeavors. Honorees are chosen based on their professional expertise and achievements and their dedication to charitable and community initiatives.
With the college since October 2016, Whirl previously served as vice president of Economic Development and Corporate Training. A Charleston, South Carolina native, he earned his associate of arts degree at Trident Technical College, a bachelor’s degree in economics at Winthrop University, a master’s degree in economics/finance at Charleston Southern University, a second master’s degree in adult education & human resource development at Armstrong State University, and a doctorate in organizational leadership at Valdosta State University.
Whirl came to GTC from Gwinnett Technical College in Georgia where he served for two years as dean of the School of Business and the School of Art & Design. Prior to that, he worked for Georgia Southern University as a visiting instructor of management and as special assistant to the chair. Academically, he’s served as a dean of adult education, dean of academic affairs, visiting professor of business, and instructor of business economics. He is a nationally sought-after, award winning, thought leader in workforce and community college education who simply desires to see students succeed, colleagues develop, and local and regional economies grow.
