TD Charitable Foundation supports financial literacy and community service at GTC

A $17,500 gift from TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, will support students at Greenville Technical College (GTC). The gift will allow the college’s Financial Education Center to celebrate Financial Literacy Week, October 21-25, 2019, with activities and events aimed at improving students’ financial knowledge and health. Experts from TD Bank will be joining the college in educating students and the college community on how to make the best financial decisions. The focus will include budgeting, spending, credit scores, debt management, and online security.

The gift will also support BudgetCon, simulation events to be held twice a year. BudgetCon allows students to take a journey through their financial lives post-graduation. Students receive the salary that corresponds to their desired career and then "walk" through the expenses of life including housing, student loan repayment, insurance, food, transportation, and miscellaneous expenditures. At the end, the students debrief with financial coaches, learning to maximize their income and lower their expenses.

In addition, the gift will assist the college in obtaining supplies for community days of service. These include Martin Luther King Day and 9/11 Remembrance Day, when volunteers come together to complete projects that benefit local agencies. These efforts increase awareness of community problems and social issues while developing leadership and interpersonal skills.
