Greenville Technical College’s School of Arts & Sciences Speaker Series presents two special guest speakers in honor of Black History Month this February.
Vernon Burton, Judge Matthew J. Perry Distinguished Chair of History and professor of Pan-African Studies, Sociology and Anthropology, Computer Science at Clemson University, will present “Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation” Thursday, Feb. 10. Lillian Brock Flemming, Greenville Mayor Pro Tem, will present “Race Relations in Greenville: Then and Now” on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
Both presentations will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the University Transfer Auditorium (Bldg. 104) on the Barton Campus and over Zoom for virtual attendees. The community is welcome to attend, and there is no cost for admission.
“The Arts & Sciences Speaker Series is pleased to have two exciting speakers in honor of Black History Month. Dr. Vernon Burton’s knowledge and writings on Lincoln and the impacts of slavery in the South are highly respected throughout the country. Lillian Brock Flemming has been a Greenville City Councilwoman for over 40 years and was one of the first African American women to attend Furman University. She’s been a strong and positive leader in our community for many years. We are excited for both their presentations,” said Dr. Thomas Takayama, dean of the School of Arts & Sciences at Greenville Technical College.
The School of Arts & Sciences Speakers Series is open to the public. GTC students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.
