The Greenville Tech Foundation announced today it has been awarded annual funding from United Way of Greenville County as part of the organization’s 2024-2026 community investments.
The grant will have a significant impact on the educational journey of students participating in the African American Male Scholars Initiative (AAMSI) at Greenville Technical College (GTC).
Created in 2019, AAMSI aims to address the challenges faced by African American males enrolled at Greenville Technical College, ultimately helping them achieve academic success. Through intensive case management and personalized support services, AAMSI helps participants overcome obstacles, develop academic and career pathways, and graduate on time with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to obtain sustainable careers and become leaders in their career fields, families, and communities.
“This generous commitment from United Way will significantly impact our efforts to expand the reach of AAMSI to additional African American male students and to increase the support services, mentorship programs, and academic resources that will help close the racial and gender opportunity gaps that exist in higher education,” said Ann Wright, Vice President for Advancement at Greenville Tech Foundation
Greenville Tech Foundation is one of 48 community organizations awarded United Way funding during this cycle. Overall, United Way will invest up to $3 million annually through 2026 for a total investment of $9 million. Grants were awarded through a competitive application process and selected based on each proposal’s alignment with United Way’s “How We Win” strategy for community change, which seeks to remove the four strongest barriers to higher earnings for individuals and families in Greenville County: housing, childcare, education and transportation.
“We are grateful to the United Way for their belief in the power of education to lift individuals over the poverty line,” said Dr. Keith Miller, president of Greenville Technical College. “This United Way support furthers the organization’s efforts to make economic mobility possible and advances the college’s mission of transforming lives through education.”
“The most urgent need facing Greenville County today is fighting the persistence of poverty,” said United Way of Greenville County President and CEO Meghan Barp. “Thanks to the generous support of our investors, we are proud to be able to make this impactful investment in The Greenville Tech Foundation. Together, we can make sure individuals and families in our community have the support and resources they need to build the life they deserve.”
The new funding cycle begins Jan. 1, 2024, and is renewable through Dec. 31, 2026.
