James “Jim” Benson was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, on October 27, 2026, in recognition of his extraordinary lifetime of service, leadership and contributions to the state.
Benson’s story is one of hard work, determination, and entrepreneurial vision. From an early age, he understood the value of honest labor, delivering newspapers, working at a local service station and textile mill, and serving in the United States Army Reserve. At just 17, he began transporting automobiles from Pennsylvania to South Carolina, recognizing an opportunity in the used automobile market that would ultimately shape his life's work.
In 1956, Benson opened his first used car dealership in Greer, South Carolina, and by 1964, he had expanded into selling new Chrysler and Plymouth vehicles. Today, Benson Automotive is a respected family-owned enterprise with multiple dealerships in Greer and Easley, serving generations of South Carolinians. His entrepreneurial legacy continues through his children and grandchildren, who now help lead the business he built from the ground up.
“While his professional accomplishments are impressive, it is Jim Benson’s unwavering commitment to serving others that truly distinguishes him,” said Senator Ross Turner, who recommended Benson for the honor. “His service to the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, generous support of Greenville Technical College, and longstanding commitment to Greer Community Ministries reflect his deep belief that success carries with it a responsibility to give back. His philanthropy has quietly but meaningfully impacted education, workforce development, and families in need across our region.”
Throughout his life, Benson has demonstrated a deep commitment to expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the community he calls home. His support of Greenville Technical College includes significant investments in student scholarships, workforce development, and campus facilities.
In 2014, Benson and his wife, Evelyn, made a transformative $3 million gift to the college’s Greer Campus, which was renamed the Benson Campus in recognition of their generosity. The gift supported campus expansion and improvements, including the addition of an amphitheater and pavilion, strengthening the college’s ability to serve students, employers, and the surrounding community.
“The Upstate continues to attract new industries, advanced manufacturing, logistics operations, healthcare providers, and technology companies at an extraordinary pace,” said Dr. Larry Miller, president of Greenville Technical College. “With that growth comes an increasing demand for skilled workers. The Benson Campus provides Jim’s neighbors with accessible, high-quality education that prepares them for the opportunities arriving every day.”
The Order of the Palmetto was presented to Benson on October 27 during the Greenville Tech Foundation’s Champions for Student Success event, an occasion dedicated to celebrating the generosity of donors and the life-changing opportunities their support makes possible. The award was presented by Sen. Jason Elliott, making the evening an especially meaningful tribute to a man whose generosity has helped shape the college’s future.
“It is fitting that Mr. Benson received the state’s highest honor at a Greenville Tech Foundation event,” said Gina Blohm, executive director of the Greenville Tech Foundation. “His 2014 gift remains the largest cash contribution in the college’s history. His generosity has allowed students to have access to educational opportunities close to home, helping them gain the skills and credentials needed to build rewarding careers. The impact of his investment extends far beyond our campus, strengthening families, businesses, and the entire Upstate community.”
