Greenville Technical College (GTC) recently received the 2024 Community College Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
First recognized in 2014, GTC is an eight-time recipient of the annual award. This national honor recognizes U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. This year, GTC is among 16 community colleges to be honored.
Many recent efforts were detailed in the college’s HEED award application including an agreement with Greenville County Schools that makes college courses free for all students and has led to broader participation in the program. In addition, efforts include the African American Male Scholars Initiative that has taken the college’s lowest performing sub-population to its highest, along with programs that remove barriers and create a welcoming environment including the Collegiate Recovery Center, the Returning Citizens program, and the Student Assistance and Resources (STAR) Center.
