The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation awarded $10,000 to the Greenville Technical College STAR Center – Caring Corner Food Pantry to restore hope and help rebuild after Hurricane Helene devastated the region in September 2024. This disaster relief grant provides financial assistance to community feeding partners, who have played a vital role in helping those affected by the storm. These funds will support long-term recovery efforts and assist in rebuilding, repairing and restoring what was damaged or lost. This grant funding builds upon the foundation’s year-round commitment to address food insecurity by increasing access to nutritious food and supporting nutritional education initiatives.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, at least 40% of the students at Greenville Technical College experienced struggles with food insecurity and basic needs. College staff mobilized quickly to purchase and bag groceries, household cleaners, and hygiene products for our students. Throughout October and November 2024, the STAR Center provided 261 large bags of food to 249 students. During this recovery time, Caring Corner food costs increased by over 400%. This financial support enables struggling students to stay in school, persist in their studies, and move closer to graduation.
The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity across its 10-state footprint. Established in 2001, the foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding local neighbors in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $22.8 million in grants.
