Ribbon was cut on December 4 to officially reopen the Margaret Mills Cubbage Child Development Center on Greenville Technical College’s Barton Campus following an extensive renovation. Guest speakers included Greenville Technical College President Keith Miller , Greenville Technical College Board Chair Ray Lattimore, Greenville Technical College Department Head Melissa Roper, and Leighton Cubbage of Allie Capital.
“The Margaret Mills Cubbage Child Development Center has played an important role for families across the Upstate, providing excellent care as it serves as a strong learning environment for future teachers through our Early Care & Education program,” said Dr. Keith Miller, president of Greenville Technical College.
The renovation included casework, finishes, lighting, doors/windows, playground, and access controls. The objective was to enhance learning spaces and safety. The facility and the Early Care & Education program offered within are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
While renovations were being completed, the center moved to temporary quarters at the Greenview Child Development Center. This sharing of resources was made possible through the college’s longstanding partnership with Greenville County Schools.
The center was originally opened in 1988. It was renovated in 1994, and in 2001, the building was rededicated and renamed the Margaret Mills Cubbage Child Development Center thanks to a donation by Leighton Cubbage that honored his mother, a longtime kindergarten teacher.
The Early Care & Education program, established in 1981, prepares graduates to be competent early childhood educators. An associate degree in Early Care & Education is offered along with Child Care Assistant, Early Childhood Development, and Early Childhood Special Education certificates.
